Am I Old Enough for TRT?
When we think of low testosterone, we often think of older men whose vitality and well-being fade as they age. But did you know that low-T impacts young men and women too? A wide range of conditions can cause low testosterone levels in young people, begging the question: am I old enough for testosterone replacement therapy (TRT)?
Does Low Testosterone Affect Younger Men?
Aging isn’t the only cause of low testosterone. Also known as hypogonadism, low-T can impact men and women at any age due to a wide range of causes including type 2 diabetes and testicle injury. In fact, between 30% and 50% of men with obesity or type 2 diabetes are estimated to suffer from hypogonadism.
The Causes of Low-T in Younger Men
While it’s true that testosterone levels naturally decline with age, many things can cause low-T in younger men. For those of us under 45, low-T can be the result of:
- Obesity
- Type 2 Diabetes
- Pituitary gland problems
- Developmental issues
- Trauma and testicle injury
- Steroid use
- Pituitary gland tumors
- HIV infection
- Chemotherapy
- Hemochromatosis
- Liver, kidney, and lung diseases
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- Klinefelter, Kallmann, and Prader-Willi syndromes
Thankfully for young people experiencing low-T, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is available to help restore your well-being and vitality.
What Is the Normal Testosterone Level for My Age?
Testosterone is measured in nanograms per deciliter (ng/dl) and varies throughout our lives as our bodies grow and change.
Normal Testosterone Levels in Children
Testosterone is normally low during childhood. It plays an important role in our fetal development, particularly in boys who experience an increase during the first two trimesters of pregnancy and again during the first six months of life.
Between the ages of 7 and 10, our testosterone levels are typically between 1.80 and 5.68 ng/dl in males and 2.69 to 10.29 ng/dl in females.
Normal Testosterone Levels in Adolescents
Puberty brings about the most significant increase in testosterone levels. During this time, our testosterone can increase 10 to 20 times compared to childhood levels. It is normally between 208.08 and 496.59 ng/dl in males and 16.72 to 31.55 ng/dl in females. This represents the peak of our testosterone levels.
Normal Testosterone Levels in Adults
From age 35 onward, our testosterone levels naturally decline. In adult men, the normal range for testosterone is between 300 and 1,000 ng/dl. Less than 300 ng/dl is considered low blood testosterone (Low-T).
Women typically experience a decline in testosterone levels during menopause. In adult women, the normal range for testosterone is between 15 and 70 ng/dl.
